This VOR is at an airport outside the United States.  The navaid has a two letter ID.
A very famous landing happened here.  The airport no longer has scheduled airline flights.
A fatal airline crash, the only one to ever happen to this type of aircraft, happened close to this airport.

Answer: OOM (Hoosier)

This month's navaid is in the United States, along an Interstate Highway.
It’s named after a lonely place on the former Santa Fe railroad, and it shares its name with a nearby quarry.
It's not far from where an event (which was given the same name) occurred that caused an Amtrak train to derail.

It's also a male name from mythology, and sounds similar to a metric system unit of area.
